| Majors Golf - Padraig Harrington wins the PGA Championship |
|
The golfing major was his second of the year after pulling off an incredible feat, winning back to back Open Championships just a few weeks earlier. Padraig Harrington talked about taking his game to another level after winning his second Open Championship, and he ended up in elite company just a month later. He joined Tiger Woods (2000 and 2006), Nick Price (1994) and Walter Hagen (1924) as the only players to win the Open Championship and PGA Championship in the same year. And the Irish golfer has now won three of the last six golfing Majors, accumulating them at a rate only the great Tiger Woods can appreciate. The last round ended up being a dog fight between Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia and 2003 Open Champion Ben Curtis. Ben Curtis led the golf tournament for most of the back nine but bogeys at the 15th and 17th put an end to his chances of a second golf Major victory, which would have massively raised his golfing profile. Ben Curtis gained some consolation though as his cracking performance earned him an automatic spot in Paul Azinger's American Ryder Cup team.
The 17th hole proved critical at the close of the golf tournament with Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia both hitting awesome approach shots as they walked up to the green tied for the lead. "I knew that I had the opportunity to get the putt in first," Padraig Harrington said. "And that was important. I knew if I holed this, I probably would win the PGA. If I missed, Sergio would probably win the PGA. So it was down to that. "And I hit a lovely putt." |
