This month’s Open Championship is not the only tournament where pro golfers experience the greatest highs and lows of the sport. In fact, the trials and tribulations of pros at the top end of golf are often not as heart-rending as for those at the lower levels.
A new book published this summer highlights the struggling lives of European journeymen golfers – Golf On The Edge: Triumphs & Tragedies Of Q School by Ross Biddiscombe.
The book closely follows seven pros whose golfing season climaxes in the annual torture that is the Qualifying School – the end-of-season tournament with almost 900 entrants that hands out just 30 PGA European Tour Cards, invitations to play in most of the biggest events during the next 12 months.
With a Q School Tour Card, a golf pro can live the dream and maybe earn the same kind of money as the Montgomeries, Harringtons and Garcias. Without the Tour Card, the golfer falls into a sort of twilight zone where the only hope is another chance at Q School.
