After taking the game of golf up at the age of fourteen at Shirley Park Golf Club in Surrey Mike became close friends with Strokeaverage.com's co-founders Chris Sells and John Franks. As part of a thriving junior golf section, Mike became a very competent golfer going on to compete at the highest level as a junior golfer. In his last year as a junior golfer he finished in the top 10 in the Carris Trophy, beating many players that would go on to play on the European and US Tours, including Strokeaverage.com client, Lee Westwood. This result didn't go un-noticed and that winter Mike was included in an English Golf Union Under 21 development golf squad, with golfers like former European tour player Carl Watts and England International and former Brabazon Trophy winner, Mark Side (Another Shirley Park Golf Club product). Though a Surrey lad by birth Mike moved golf clubs to Sundridge Park Golf Club in Bromley, Kent and was a stalwart of the Kent Golf Union's Colts Team and Men's Team for the next few years, forming a successful golf foursome’s partnership with Walker Cup Team golfer, Paul Page.
After turning golf professional as an assistant golf professional at Addington Palace Golf Club in Surrey in 1997, he carried on playing competitively in the PGA’s South Region golf events and on the PGA Europro Tour with some success, before dedicating himself to golf coaching the game of golf full time upon completing his PGA Diploma at Addington Palace Golf Club. Mike then moved to the Mark Janes Golf Academy in Chessington, Surrey to fine tune his golf coaching skills and after two years there was able to secure a full time golf coaching position at the fabulous East Sussex National Golf Resort, in East Sussex. Where he taught along side Golf Monthly’s Top 25 coach, Sarah Maclennan, for four very successful years. Here he became very involved with the Sussex County Golf Union’s junior programme and very soon became the lead golf coach to the Under 14’s team and now manages the Elite Golf Squad for their competitive golf events throughout the summer and forms part of a larger team that oversees their winter golf coaching programme that culminates in a week long intensive golf ‘training camp’ at the famous La Manga Golf Club in Murcia, Spain. Mike also sits on the Sussex County Golf Union's junior committee as their golf coaching advisor.
As a golf coach, Mike takes a holistic approach and looks at all areas of the game, especially the short game, to help each golfer achieve their goals. A keen golf student himself, Mike regularly attends golf seminars around the UK, Europe and America to keep his golf skills as up to date as possible. He has also been fortunate enough to be able observe at first hand some of the great coach’s, like David Leadbetter, Jonathon Yarwood and Nick Bradley coach they their ‘Star’ golf students.
